With most carriers already rolling out Android Marshmallow on the newest Samsung flagship devices, namely the Galaxy S6 series and Galaxy Note 5, we expect to hear reports of issues arising from this new operating system. In this post, we give to you two #GalaxyNote5 issues we’ve encountered so far after receiving Marshmallow update.
  1. Galaxy Note 5 contacts issue after updating to Android Marshmallow
  2. Downloads via Wi-Fi not working after updating Galaxy Note 5 to Marshmallow
  3. Photobucket app on Galaxy Note 5 showing error code 505
  4. Galaxy Note 5 speaker volume gradually decreases throughout the day
  5. T-Mobile Galaxy Note 5 group messaging problem
  6. Galaxy Note 5 won’t stay on unless connected to a charger

PROBLEM #1: GALAXY NOTE 5 CONTACTS ISSUE AFTER UPDATING TO ANDROID MARSHMALLOW

So, i noticed this just started after doing the system update to Marshmallow. My contacts are all messed up. And i mean, messed up. A good number of people including my wife turn into either unknown contact, half a name with unknown, many random contacts are joined with other contacts. Along with that, Facebook pictures of a contact for one person is joined with someone else’s contact info. I have reset my phone twice to fix. It’s fixed for a day or so and then messes up again. No clue what the deal is here. Not sure of it has something to do with apps i have that are allowed access to my contacts. It’s just very screwy and annoying. And ideas? Need more info with this issue?
Thanks. — Rob
Solution: Hi Rob. A lot of things can happen following an update due to many factors that come into play. If the issue returns after doing a factory reset, that’s an indication that one of your apps installed afterwards is to blame. Go over your list of apps and try to uninstall anything that uses or use contacts as a resource. For example, if you have a third party email app, consider updating or removing it completely to see if it makes any difference.
Android Marshmallow is a new operating system and many apps are still not optimized to work with it. Your contacts problem may either be due to an incompatible app, or a rare operating system glitch that Samsung and Google are not aware of at this time.
You can also try booting the phone in safe mode so you can observe how contacts are displayed. While in safe mode, your phone prevents third party applications from loading. If one of them is the culprit, the issue should not occur.
You also want to make sure that all your apps are updated. If you suspect that an app may be causing the trouble and there’s no available update for it at this time, be sure to contact its developer so they can look into the problem.
Again, updating the operating system does not mean apps are updated too. Apps that are designed to work with previous Android iterations like Kit Kat or Lollipop may not work properly with Marshmallow, hence the need to update them.

PROBLEM #2: DOWNLOADS VIA WI-FI NOT WORKING AFTER UPDATING GALAXY NOTE 5 TO MARSHMALLOW

Wi-Fi downloads / updates to Google Play Store apps drop after 18-20 seconds. Other Wi-Fi internet connections / functions seem fine. Play store downloads via mobile data also fine as long as Wi-Fi is turned off. Toggling Wi-Fi, mobile data, Bluetooth & Airplane mode in various combinations had no effect. Same with clearing Play Services & Play Store caches & uninstalling updates to same.
Also uninstalled Smart Wi-Fi Toggler app. Problem occurs in safe mode as well.
Also, battery draining noticeably faster than with Lollipop. Can’t figure out how to uninstall/ reinstall Google Play Services & Play Store (other than updates) so expect to read up on & try soft / hard / factory resets if / as necessary. I suspect the update to Google Play Services immediately following Marshmallow update may have hiccupped somehow but whatever gave me that impression came & went so fast I didn’t give it much thought at the time. — Peter
Solution: Hi Peter. If the issues above happened after installing Android Marshmallow, make sure that you wipe the cache partition and do a factory reset. For easy reference, below are the steps how to do them.
How to wipe the Galaxy Note 5 cache partition
  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
How to factory reset a Galaxy Note 5
  • Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  • When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  • Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Press the Volume Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  • After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

PROBLEM #3: PHOTOBUCKET APP ON GALAXY NOTE 5 SHOWING ERROR CODE 505

Hi. A few days ago I had an update for my Photobucket app. Went to Play Store, updated a few things then went to Photo Bucket, but I keep getting “error code 505” just for that app. So I left it alone.
Now when I enter my Play Store, I can do nothing. The loading icon freezes up as well as the Play Store itself. I did a clear cache, force stop, soft reset. I use advanced task killer regularly. I even used my phone up till the battery died. I’ve run out of idea’s & here I am to see if you can help?? I deleted a few of the most recent apps I had to see of that helped  & it didn’t.
I’ve not had this happen before, I’ve had this phone over a year without problems.
I’d appreciate any idea’s!
Thank you very much  — Dacia
Solution: Hi Dacia. A situation like this can happen anytime due to a high number of potential factors that can mess up the operating system and installed apps. The best thing that you can right now is to try to delete the cache partition and do a factory reset, just like what we suggest for Peter above. Any of these procedures should help.

PROBLEM #4: GALAXY NOTE 5 SPEAKER VOLUME GRADUALLY DECREASES THROUGHOUT THE DAY

I just bought this phone, new, about 3 weeks ago. I noticed that when it first starts up the speaker is really loud but throughout the day it’ll get quieter to where I can barely hear music on it or my ringtones when someone calls or texts. I did a hard reset and got rid of any apps that I think could possibly be messing with the sound, but it is still having the same issue. When talking on the phone I can hear just fine so I don’t think it’s the speaker.
Do you think there possibly could be another app affecting this that I haven’t deleted. I took it to Verizon and they said it must be an app since the speaker works during calls. I was just hoping you may have ran into a similar issue with someone else’s phone or can give me some ideas of what could be causing this.
Thank you. — Tiffani
Solution: Hi Tiffani. We’ve noticed this problem with Nexus 6 before but we can’t pinpoint the exact cause or solution for it. The best thing that you can do here is to do trial-and-error troubleshooting like performing basic software solutions. What you can do first is to set your phone in safe mode for a day to see if a third party app is responsible. While safe mode is on, all third party applications cannot run so it’s good to check if our hunch is right.
Once the phone has booted in safe mode, its performance will dramatically improve, app crashes will be gone and you can do whatever troubleshooting procedures you need to do to regain your phone’s top-notch performance. Here’s how you do the safe mode reboot:
  • Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  • Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  • Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  • You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.
If the problem remains, make sure that you wipe the cache partition and do a factory reset. Kindly follow the steps provided above.
Once you have done the factory reset, observe the phone again for another 24 hours before installing any of your apps. It should help you determine if the OS has a conflict with apps after a setup.

PROBLEM #5: T-MOBILE GALAXY NOTE 5 GROUP MESSAGING PROBLEM

I am having HUGE issues all of the sudden with my Note 5 for T-Mobile. I’m running the 5.1.1 for Android. Here’s the problem…
As you know, there is a check mark within the text message when you select more than one recipient. By leaving it checked, you can send a group message. By deselecting, it becomes a mass message and everyone gets an individual message. I have had this phone for 13 days, and it worked great for about 3. On the 4th day, the option to uncheck the box had disappeared.
I did all troubleshooting suggested by T-Mobile (including holding down Volume Pp/Power/Home and clearing cache). After some research on my own, I discovered this was an issue with the Note 4. The solution by that gentleman was a bad SIM card. So I removed mine, and it INSTANTLY worked. However, when I put it back, the problem returned.
I got a new SIM and that did not fix the issue. So I returned the phone and got a NEW Note 5. When the new phone was turned on, the check mark was there. Then we restored my new phone to download apps and music, and when I got home the issue was back!
But in case you’re thinking the answer is master reset, I DID IT. 4 times in a row!!! Both with and without restoring the phone/removing the sim card. Still the problem persists!
HELP! — Carlos
Solution: Hi Carlos. If the issue only happens AFTER the initial setup (including after a factory reset), then the problem might be due to poorly coded firmware (which means this is a T-Mobile issue), or a bad messaging app. If you are using the native messaging app and you haven’t updated the operating system after a factory reset, that also points to a firmware-related issue. Either case, it’s a T-Mobile problem and you should ask them for direct assistance. That factory resetting the phone numerous times did not work is a clear indication that the problem is on the operating of T-Mobile’s device. There’s nothing that we can do about this problem. T-Mobile should be the one to report the issue to their developer team that handles firmware on their devices.

PROBLEM #6: GALAXY NOTE 5 WON’T STAY ON UNLESS CONNECTED TO A CHARGER

Within the last few weeks on vacation, I noticed my phone started to constantly shut off regardless of the battery life. At first I thought because of too much exposure to the sun it was just shutting off as a safety precaution. However the problem persisted. I started to notice when I opened the SnapChat app or my camera, it would shut off automatically and the only way for it to completely turn back on was if it was plugged into a charger. Over the last week, it would stay on without any issues, but again would shut off with opening the two apps.
I tried to check it in safe mode but it still kept shutting off and I always have a good habit of manually closing apps. Within the last two days now my phone will not stay on unless plugged into a charger, regardless of any app I am using. I have backed it up just in case, but I was wondering if this could just be a battery issue.
I don’t recall having a recent software update but I could be wrong. My apps update on their own and the only app I recently installed was the Netflix app and MAPS.ME for travel purposes. Do you have any suggestions? — Tia
Solution: Hi Tia. An issue like yours can have a software or hardware cause. Your first task is to determine whether you can fix the problem by doing the know software solutions. Be sure to do the procedures mentioned above (booting in safe mode, wiping the cache partition, or performing a factory reset). If the phone is losing significant amount of battery power due to a bad app or firmware glitch, any of the three procedures should help.
If nothing changes though, you can safely assume that faulty hardware is to blame. This can mean that the battery may have failed completely at this time, or some components are having hardware errors. Don’t hesitate to call Samsung or your wireless provider so you can secure a replacement.
